Philmont training hike

posted Aug 28, 2011 8:11 AM by 1130 Admin   [ updated Aug 28, 2011 9:06 AM ]

We had our first Philmont training hike this Saturday (Aug 27) under the leading edge clouds of Hurricane Irene.   We started at Chain Bridge and hiked along Pimmit Run all the way back to McLean (approx 6 -7 miles).  Each scout and adult planning on attending Philmont wore a backpack with at least a partial load:  sleeping bag, tent, sleeping pad, raingear, camp shoes, trail snacks, dish and utensils, hat, and 3 liters (minimum) of water.  At Philmont we will carry more than this.  We also had several scouts and parents who are not going to Philmont came along to do the hike.

We'll make several more Philmont hiking trials to make sure all participants are well prepared for the real thing next year.

Rodney 2011

We had a good check-in yesterday and hit the pool for our swim tests. Last night we enjoyed the cookout on the Parade Field and the evening campfire show. A number of scouts will be at the pool early for the Polar Bear swim before breakfast. Today looks like it's going to be a great day at Camp Rodney.

Ski Trip--January 14-17, 2011--

We all had really good days of skiing at Timberline. It Started out sunny and cold, and finished up windy and snowing.  At this time, most of the adults are resting, and the scouts have card games going on at the bunkhouse.  Not sure who plans to ski tonight (not me).  Conditions at the slope are as good as we've ever seen them.  All lifts and runs are open.  We are all looking forward to a good night's sleep and hitting the slopes again tomorrow, with fresh snow on the ground.

Jake's eagle project--11/27/2010--

posted Nov 28, 2010 7:43 AM by Troop 1130 Historian   [ updated Nov 28, 2010 9:13 AM ]

On Saturday, November 27, 2010, many members and supporters of Troop 1130 helped Jake Ahlgrimm with his Eagle project consisting of relocating a trail along the Potomac River.  The project's trail portion is part of the Potomac Heritage Trail, an evolving 800 mile network of braided trails, anchored in a continuous route connecting the Chesapeake Bay though the nation's capital to the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania.  Jake's project involved relocating a portion of trail to higher terrain along the Virginia side of the Potomac River just south of Chain Bridge.  This portion of the trail flooded frequently by rising river levels and made it unusable by hikers.   Relocating the trail included blazing a new swath on higher terrain, clearing brush and trees and rocks from the swath and rerouting directional guides so that hikers would use the relocated trail and not the former trail.
Jake was grateful for all the scouts and parents that showed up to help with the project.    It couldn't have been completed without the effort and hard work of so many scouts and friends.

Siege of Mafeking

posted Nov 16, 2010 5:08 AM by 1130 Admin   [ updated Nov 16, 2010 5:13 AM ]

The troop hosting the camp out were expertly in character, and they seemed to really enjoy our company.

It was my first time going to Mafeking, but I enjoyed it, as well as my patrol.   The hosting troop was extremely creative with the 6 "missions" which included securing supplies from stations, such as barbed wire (a spool), "nitroglycerine" (apple cider) "gunpowder" (cocoa) and others.

Finished the night with a score of 91.5, landing us in 4th place.
