The projectoree is a annual activite held by troop 111. The projectoree is a series of games that test skill and some that are just for fun.The games are all lead by senior scouts from the troops participating. Each troop must come up with a game. The other scouts not running a game participate in a series of games made by the other troops and the troop withthe highest score wins. Unfortunaltley troop 1130 didn't place in the projectoree but their is always next year. Tank you to all the people who helped make this event possible and the scouts who participated. |

On April 11, 2011 scouts from various troops set off to the Potomac River to earn three merit on a two day period. The first day scouts woke up early in the morning and began sailing small boats with the sea scouts in order to earn the small boat sailing merit badge. The scouts took shifts between sailing and learning the knowledge of sailboats and of weather and oceanography for the final test at the end of the weekend. Every scout passed the test and earned all three merit badges. The scouts all had a fantastic time sailing. It was a great experience for everyone |

This year Boy Scout Troop 1130 of
McLean, Virginia held its annual mulch sale and delivery. On February 26th
the scouts sold mulch throughout McLean to help raise money for the Troop’s
activities. The scouts spent all day going door to door, selling mulch and
accepting donations. The generous families of McLean purchased 6,480 bags of
mulch and donated over $600 dollars to Troop 1130. Mulch delivery was
held one month later and was a huge success. All the families of Troop 1130
were present to help, drive trucks, carpool scouts, feed the hungry scouts
and parents, keep the yard clean and deliver mulch. The mulch sale was a
overwhelming success thanks to the help of many great parents, past and present
as well as scouts of all ages and sizes. Many thanks to Tuckahoe Recreation
Club and the Charles Wesley United Methodist Church for allowing us to use
their facilities during the mulch delivery and throughout the year.
On March 26,
in the early hours of the morning the boy scouts from troop 1130 gathered at Tuckahoe
recreation center to participate in our annual mulch delivery. Almost every
scout was in attendance as twice as many parents. The navigators and drivers
set out with trucks full of mulch with chase cars right behind them filled up
with eager scouts ready to help the troop. The troop sold everyone of its bags
of mulch and finished before the day was over. Many thanks to the parents and
scouts who help make this mulch sale a success.

On February 5, 2011 Troop 1130 set out to Camp Highroad in Aldie, VA to compete in the annual Klondike Derby. The derby, hosted by Troop 111, is based on the Canadian gold rush of the 19th century. Approximately 20 scouts and parents attended the event. Troop 1130 was divided into two teams, a junior team led by Aaron, and David, and a senior team led by Andrew and Salim. The two teams set out on a 4 mile course pushing their sleds full of supplies, stopping at various stations to complete challenges; scout knowledge, orienteering, first aid, knots and lashings, and camp skills. The scouts were awarded “gold nuggets” for each successful challenge completed. The team with the fastest time and the most nuggets won the competition. The winners of the competition have yet to be announced. Despite the cold and wet weather the scouts had a fantastic time at the derby and are looking forward to next year’s derby. Below are links to the video and the pictures Mr. Atak took at the derby

On Saturday, Feb 5 will be the annual Klondike Derby at Camp Highroads near Aldie, VA (45 minute drive). Trying to figure out how many 6-10 person teams we will have for the event, and of those going, how many are interested in camping overnight Friday, Feb 4. The Klondike Derby is a challenging midwinter contest of teamwork and Scouting skills. Your “team” (patrol or crew) will pull a dog sled you have built yourself (ahead of time) over a course through woods and fields. Your sled is loaded with the equipment you will need for the day’s activities. The trail will take you to a number of Klondike "towns" spread along the route. Upon arriving at each "town," your Team Leader reports to the town mayor who assigns you a task. Teams are awarded gold nuggets for completing the tasks. The team with the most gold nuggets, coupled with an overall time to complete the course is the winner. There are usually on the order of 25 teams involved, so this is a major scouting event.

On October 9-10, 2010, nineteen scouts and adults went backpacking in the George Washington National Forest. The first day, the group backpacked about 4 miles to a campsite along the banks of Passage Creek. This hike was a gradual incline with an elevation change of about 400 vertical feet. They set up camp, purified water, had dinner, and built a big campfire. Sunday morning, October 10, just after sunrise the group started the ascent to the top of the mountain. Over a little more than hour, the group climbed 1,100 vertical feet to reach the top, Duncan Knob, elevation 2,800 feet. The last part of the trip was climbing up a huge rock pile that had been created when a cliff collapsed many years ago. It was a spectacularly clear day and from Duncan Knob you could see other mountains in all directions. Some trees had started to change colors, which made the scenery that much more beautiful. After coming down from Duncan Knob, the troop returned to camp, packed their gear, and made the trek back to their cars. For some scouts, this was their first backpacking trip. They did an outstanding job. |
